OBSERVATIONS BRIeFING

Welcome,  the following forms are going to help us put together an 'Backcountry Travel Advisory' for MSC. This systematic approach allows users to ‘show their working’ as well as populate fields that are published to the Mountain Sports Collective(MSC) website. This model is consistent with international standards, adapted for Australian conditions.

You need to register with us first

The MSC's goal is to produce regular and accurate public advisories that have been produced through a consistent methodology, while presenting the information in an engaging and easily interpreted manner. We are relatively agnostic regarding the semantics of how you record results so write results as you see and know them, we can unpack it.

Step 1: downloading and reviewing this guide IS A GOOD START.

STEP 2: USE THE LOGIC TO DEFINE YOUR PRIMARY, SECONDARY and TERTIARY HAZARDS.

Review the Logic before observations and define the problem(s) list that you will be interrogating.
• Use as few problems as possible to cover risk management issues.
• Important: Persistent Slabs are only a problem when you expect avalanches on that layer.
• Remove Deep Persistent Slabs from the problem list when triggering is 'hard', as there are other more likely problems.
It will be handy to have this logic diagram available 'in the field', save it off to your smartphone.
