We recieved up to 60cm of new snow across the Australian Alps on the June opening long weekend that’s filled in a lot of alpine terrain, but conditions are still considered “early season”. This period is characterised by variable snow depths in the alpine with exposed rocks and bushes. Below the tree line the dense undergrowth and fallen timber is partially buried while creeks are likely to be openly flowing and not yet covered by snow bridges. People have already started reporting some reasonable touring conditions in the backcountry but step out cautiously and be mindful of the likely hazards.
If you’re planning a backcountry tour, please remember to fill in a Trip Intention Form for New South Wales or Victoria and carry a Personal Locator Beacon.
