Terrain and travel advice
There is a surface crust which is supportive and softened on northerly aspects yesterday. However on non-solar aspects the crust is breakable and remains icy and difficult to ride in places. With the cooler temps today, watch for areas of localised ice in the alpine.
Visibility is forecast to deteriorate as the low pressure trough moves in.
Daily Discussion
The surface of the snowpack is capped with melt-freeze crust. On solar aspects this crust is more robust and carrying. If the surface softens, it can be quite good skiing. On southerly aspects, the crust is 3-5cm thick and breakable making for challenging skiing conditions.
Today we will see a change in weather as we head into an unsettled pattern in the coming days.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
