Terrain and travel advice
Travel in the subalpine is rugged. Expect a breakable crust up to approximately 1900m. As temperatures warm, this crust will break down and then travel becomes unsupported as the snowpack is isothermal.
In the alpine, there is evidence of rain to the highest elevations that is now frozen. Icy conditions exist on all aspects. Skinning was possible to the top of Rams Head yesterday without issue, but crampons would be useful if visiting steeper terrain.
Daily Discussion
Conditions are hard and fast in the alpine. The surface is just carvable but definitely teeth chattering at times.
In the subalpine the cover is too shallow and rugged to find any turns. Currently, it is the necessary evil to get up high (depending on your trailhead of choice).
More snow will come.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
