Regional observations

The ranges have been smashed by the rain this week. Going from a good cover of dry fresh snow that stayed cold from last Monday (3rd June / 20-30cm), sitting on the ‘rotten wet round’ corn snow from the previous event (28-31st May / 20-30cm), to now only 30cm of isothermal snow cover after 140mm of rain has fallen this week. Due to the contrasted wind patterns over the two snow events, cornice formation is counteracted and not prominent. The distribution of snow coverage is even with the effect of the rain most notable on aspects north west high up and everywhere below 1750m At the time of observation we are just heading back into the ‘minus’ and it looks as though we can expect the variable cover to firm up, crust over in places, prior to the forecast marginal and wet snowfall over the weekend.
In summary, a patchy base, firming up… awaiting new snow. Hold your charge folks… SM

BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:

It’s a pretty grim state of affairs out there, with the best backcountry offering being the groomed trails for means of access to remote isolated drifts on a patchy cover. Tipped to improve overnight with a dusting of fresh snow. SM

BACKCOUNTRY CONDITIONS:

Poor travel conditions mixed with marginal cover below 1800m and patchy snow cover above has set the Bogong scene packing. We’ll check back in with Bogong after the 19th when the next meaningful snow event is tipped to take place.
