CENTRAL EAST VIC:
RECENT OBSERVATIONS
Updated: 13TH / JULY /2018

REPORT CONFIDENCE: STRONG
CURRENT UNTIL: 15TH / JULY/ 2018

OBSERVATION SUMMARY

TREND: IMPROVING / ONGOING / DETERIORATING

Front Range: Buller / Stirling

After last weekend's snow, it has been a week of fine weather, with cold nights. This is making for very icy conditions in the morning, which continues during the day on slopes protected from the sun.

It is now extremely wind scoured on the summit area of Mt Stirling, with many exposed rocks and bushes. The areas with good cover are those which are protected from the sun or on leeward side of features.

Stanley Bowl still has a good cover. However be aware that there could be sections with breakable crust, especially with aggressive turning while skiing/ riding the slope.

We assume that the western ridge of Mt Buller also has severe wind scouring and variable conditions. There was significant ice formation on steeper and rocky sections of the ridge during the week, so scope lines first and practice extreme caution.

BACK Range: Magdala / Howitt / Viking  & Cobbler

We are treating the back side of the Central east as the general advisory for the North East at the moment given the geography and forecast weather pattern.

Be aware that the snow pack is now weather affected and very icy in many places, including on steeper slopes in the Back Range.

NB: please note that access roads to the Back Ranges (eg to The Bluff via the Howqua River) may have icy patches in shaded areas.

OUTLOOK: High pressure, and good visibility. The melt /freeze cycle will dictate conditions for the near future.

Weather through til sunday night 15th July is expected to be partly cloudy with good visibility and only light winds. Next snow bearing front is expected on monday.
