Take any avalanche safety course and there’s one transceiver that the instructors are invariably using - the Mammut Barryvox. Ask them why and the answer is usually something like “If I’m trusting my own or my friend’s lives on a piece of avalanche safety gear, I want to know I’ve got the best”. Go into the draw to win one yourself by signing up for MSC’s membership drive.
Mammut’s Australian team forged close ties with Mountain Safety Collective in our early years when they gave us support for initiatives like building the first Avalanche Training Centre in Australia at Mount Hotham. We’re pleased to announce that this support has been formalised with Mammut signing on as MSC’s official Avalanche Safety Equipment partner.
The sponsorship provides funding to continue professionalising MSC’s backcountry observations and forecasting alongside new initiatives like an Avalanche Training Centre in NSW. It also provides top of the line safety equipment for MSC’s field teams and for MSC Members through prize giveaways. MSC will also be working with Mammut on developing a series of safety education content for their local audience.
Mammut is a company with roots in Swiss mountaineering dating back to 1862. This focus continued through the 20th century, with climbers trusting their lives with the Swiss quality of Mammut’s ropes and safety gear. This led to Mammut being commissioned by the Swiss Army to develop the first Barryvox avalanche transceiver over 50 years ago, with the first consumer version available in 1972. Iterations of the design have been released over the decades, with the Barryvox S considered the gold-standard with its 70m+ range and array of highly customisable features.
Complementing their avalanche transceivers, Mammut is a pioneer in the development of the avalanche airbags alongside durable but lightweight probes and shovels, all of which are available through Mammut’s Australian online store.
We look forward to many more years of collaboration with a partner that’s so focused on mountain safety!
