There has been a dusting of snow across the Australian Alps with more forecast in the week leading up to the June long weekend, but conditions are considered “early season” with inadequate snow cover to provide daily Backcountry Conditions Reports. This period is characterised by variable snow depths in the alpine with exposed rocks and bushes. Below the tree line the dense undergrowth and fallen timber is exposed while creeks are openly flowing. If you are planning early season backcountry touring, exercise caution and pay close attention to the alpine weather forecasts.
If you’re planning a backcountry tour, please remember to fill in a Trip Intention Form for New South Wales or Victoria and carry a Personal Locator Beacon.
