While there were early snowfalls around the June long weekend, NSW has seen around 250mm of rain with Victoria surpassing 300mm through the remainder of the month with average temperatures 2-3 degrees warmer than the same time last year. For in-depth analysis of the current weather patterns and long term outlook, follow The Snowstack.
Temperatures cooled on Saturday 20th June with around 20cm of wet snow falling above 1800m - well below the threshold to start the daily Backcountry Conditions Reports. The current conditions are very low snow cover in the alpine with exposed rocks and bushes. Below the tree line there is no snow with the dense undergrowth and fallen timber exposed while creeks are openly flowing. If you are planning early season adventures, exercise caution and pay close attention to the alpine weather forecasts.
If you’re planning a backcountry tour, please remember to fill in a Trip Intention Form for New South Wales or Victoria and carry a Personal Locator Beacon.
