Very warm day yesterday. Moist snow on shady aspects up to 1850m, and solar aspects moist to ridge top.
In the alpine, wind slabs are still reacting to snow pack tests, but are showing hard resistant planar results. No new cornice failures seen or reported, but it was noted that some cornices are beginning to sag.
In the sub-alpine: Moist snow on all aspects. Lower elevations approaching isothermal.
We traveled on a variety of aspects between 1600m-1940m and chose well supported slopes and avoiding convex wind loaded areas.
Daily Discussion
Warm temperatures are forecast again for today.
First thing this morning the surface snow is likely to be crusty. This crust will be quick to break down once the sun gets onto the slopes, and expect moist surface conditions on solar aspects.
In the alpine, winds are helping keep snow cold and dry above 1850m on southerly aspects. Be aware that the winds are forecast to be strong today and this morning there have been gusts up to 80km/h.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
Mostly sunny. Medium (60%) chance of showers late tonight. Snow possible above 1800 metres. Winds northwesterly 60 to 85 km/h. (Source:BOM)
