In the alpine: Wind effect on windward slopes and ridge tops has left isolated areas of ice and sastrugi. Pencil hard wind slabs on cross-loaded features are bonding to previous surface. Beware recent cornice development.
In the sub-alpine southerly slopes continue to settle on all aspects with warm temperatures. Solar aspects and slopes below 1700m have a breakable crust first thing with solar aspects becoming moist in the afternoon.
Riding quality is good with 5-15cm of ski penetration in areas skied (SE aspects 1800-2100m).
Daily Discussion
The big thing to pay attention to today is the temperature. The forecasted high is 10 degrees at Perisher. This dramatic increase in heat could be enough to trigger some of the new overhanging cornices as well as weaken the upper layers of the snowpack, particularly on solar aspects. Watch for unstable snow on isolated terrain features.
Good turns can still be found on sheltered southerly aspects although the snow has settled and ski penetration is less.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
Sunny. Winds west to northwesterly 25 to 35 km/h increasing to 25 to 40 km/h in the late evening. (Source:BOM)
