Yesterday, the best conditions were found in the sub-alpine on southerly aspects. There were also decent turns on sheltered slopes in the alpine.
Northerly aspects now have a crust on them from the previous day’s sun. This crust in breakable for the most part, but firmer on steeper slopes where the sun has had more effect.
Daily Discussion
A little snow and a lot of NW wind (up to 137km gusts recorded at 1957m!) overnight will have created very stiff wind loading on lee aspects. There will be widespread wind effect in the alpine.
On solar aspects, expect to find a breakable crust. This crust is firmer on steeper slopes and ski crampons are helpful if traveling in this terrain.
Good turns can still be found on sheltered southerly aspects although the snow has settled and ski penetration is less. With temperatures forecast to increase, we will see a lot more settlement in the coming days.
Cornices are overhanging in places and are a concern, especially as the temperatures increase in the coming days.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
Mostly sunny. Winds southwesterly 30 to 45 km/h becoming southwesterly 15 to 25 km/h in the evening. (Source:BOM)
