Terrain and travel advice
In the subalpine ski quality has improved and nice turns can be found in sheltered areas. Coverage is still thin though, so please keep this in mind. There are still bushes and rocks just lurking beneath the snow that can be hazardous.
In the alpine, coverage improves and travel becomes easier. Localized ice may be encountered on windward slopes. On leeward slopes watch for unstable snow on lee features such as cornices and windslabs.
Daily Discussion
The storm snow from the weekend is sitting on a melt freeze crust and appears to be bonding. Field tests did find a resistant planar shear within the storm snow down approximately 20cm and we suspect this bond will continue to strengthen in the coming days.
The primary concern in the alpine are cornices and windslabs on lee slopes. Yesterday public sent in information of a small cornice failure that was skier triggered on a wind loaded feature around treelike (1850m).
Watch for unstable snow on isolated terrain features.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
