Terrain and travel advice
In the subalpine, the snowpack is thin and there are exposed bushes, rocks and open creeks to navigate. Surface conditions will be icy first thing and should soften during the day as temperatures rise.
Above 1800m and into the alpine, coverage improves and travel becomes easier. Localized ice may be encountered on windward slopes where the new snow has been stripped away leaving only the frozen rain crust.
Visibility will be variable today in the alpine. Be prepared for possible whiteout navigation.
Daily Discussion
Storm snow in the past 48hrs is now over 20cm. Moderate westerly winds have redistributed this snow onto lee slopes. Look for cornice development and windslabs on easterly/southeasterly slopes.
Watch for unstable snow on isolated terrain features.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
