There is a mixed bag of conditions in the mountains currently.
In the alpine, wind slabs avalanche hazards exist in isolated lee features from NW winds. We expect these are not bonding well to the previous surface and that this hazard will be building over the next 24hrs.
In the sub-alpine, the snowpack is only a very shallow cover. Yes we said we were closed… alas Ullr had a different idea.
Travel & Terrain advice:
Be aware of navigational issues with low visibility, particularly in the alpine. Avalanche hazard – wind slab - on aspects lee to the North West, avoid convexities and slopes over 25 degrees. Below tree line be aware of obstacles due to shallow snowpack.
Currently we have a developing windslab hazard in the alpine on aspects lee to the north west. Yesterday we received 10cm of snow interspersed with wind and freeze conditions creating a patch work of variable bed surface that this new storm loading now sits on. Be sure to make robust assessments of these localised problem slopes before venturing. We’ll know more soon, so while we said we’d closed down, Ullr had a different plan.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Kosciuszko National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
