Mountain environments can be categorised as above or below the tree line, thus Alpine and Subalpine respectively. Find out more about how these types of terrain can create or mitigate backcountry hazards here.
Travel & Terrain advice:
Weather coming in from the northwest may create periods of low visiblity up high as well as strong winds with gusts up to 70kmh. Widespread ice in the alpine will create slide risk on steep slopes. At lower elevations the surface may soften up to make for nice turns, particularly on leeward aspects.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
Widespread surface crust with some sastrugi up high. On solar aspects and lower elevations the crust is becoming breakable as temps increase during the day, with ‘slumping’ creating a very textured and variable surface. Bushes and rocks reappearing around 1700m.
