Mountain environments can be categorised as above or below the tree line, thus Alpine and Subalpine respectively. Find out more about how these types of terrain can create or mitigate backcountry hazards here.
Travel & Terrain advice:
Widespread surface crust has formed due to colder temps. Beware of slide risk on steep slopes in the alpine. On lower elevations watch for breakable crust. Head for the northern aspects in the sub-alpine which will soften through the day. The snow depth is great and the Main Range is well covered.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
Widespread surface crust. On solar aspects and lower elevations the crust is becoming breakable as temps increase during the day.
