The rain has decimated the lower elevations. Under 1700m is mostly below threshold and has patchy cover. Up to 1800m the snowpack is unsupportive with snowshoers and skiers alike experiencing collapsing around shrubs.
A little higher, above 1800m, the snowpack is more supportive and there was 10cm of new snow. This snow was moist by midday and riding conditions were sticky and heavy.
In the alpine, minor wind effect from SE winds was noted.
Lastly, one small loose snow avalanche was observed on an isolated steep north aspect at approximately 1900m.
Daily Discussion:
Another wet day ahead with limited visibility. Snow is forecast to be above 1850m.
Bring extra layers and be prepared for a warm wet day.
The rain has been weakening the snowpack and it is not supportive in the sub-alpine. Be cautious crossing rivers on snow bridges as they may collapse.
Be prepared for whiteout navigation.
Uncertain of exact freezing level for today.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
Cloudy. Very high (90%) chance of snow showers. Winds southwesterly 25 to 40 km/h turning westerly in the late morning. (Source: BOM)
