Mountain environments can be categorised as above or below the tree line, thus Alpine and Subalpine respectively. Find out more about how these types of terrain can create or mitigate backcountry hazards here.
Travel & Terrain advice:
Widespread surface crust has formed due to colder temps, teeth-chattering up high! Beware of slide risk on steep slopes. In the alpine there will be periods of low visibility. On lower elevations and solar aspects watch for breakable crust. The snow depth is great and the Main Range is well covered. Looking forward to better surface conditions in coming days with solar softening of the surface crust on Friday and Saturday and then some new snow predicted from Sunday.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
Widespread surface crust. On solar aspects and lower elevations the crust is becoming breakable as temps increase during the day.
