Mountain environments can be categorised as above or below the tree line, thus Alpine and Subalpine respectively. Find out more about how these types of terrain can create or mitigate backcountry hazards here.
Travel & Terrain advice:
Over 30cm of snow has fallen in the last 24 hours. Travel in the Alpine is not recommended due to low visibility and increasing winds through the day as well as a moderate avalanche hazard. Stick to areas below treeline, but beware of rocks and bushes just below the surface. Snow will be heavy going.
Storm Slabs possible to size 2 on all aspects . Over 30cms of new snow has fallen in the past 24 hours. This new snow sits on the 2020-07-12 crust.
Wind has been light from the SE but the wind is forecast to increase. With plenty of snow available for transport, an increasing wind will create wind slabs on leeward aspects and elevate the avalanche hazard.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
30cm of new snow with more possible at higher elevations. Snow is heavy and will be wet down low. Below treeline a lot of the obstacles of the past week are covered making for easier travel and possibility of more turns!
Low to moderate ESE-SE winds with stronger gusts in the Alpine. Temps ranging from -1 to 1. A low developing off the east coast is bringing snowfalls. The low will move away to the east in the second half of the week to be replaced by a ridge of high pressure. [Source:BOM]
