A hot day yesterday in the sun, and as such, steep solar aspects quickly became moist in the morning.
Otherwise, widespread ice was encountered. The ice is particularly hazardous on SE aspects and ski crampons were helpful for uphill travel.
On west aspects, the surface crust has patches of wind sifted snow from previous SE winds and made for ‘better’ skiing.
Daily Discussion:
With cloud cover forecast for today, there will be little softening of the surface crust on any aspects.
Beware of steep icy slopes. Ski crampons are quite helpful ascending.
Cloud cover is forecast to increase throughout the day and low cloud may decrease visibility. Be prepared for low visibility navigation.
LOW avalanche danger does not mean NO danger. Watch for unstable snow on isolated features.
Generally safe avalanche conditions. Watch for unstable snow on isolated terrain features.
We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
