Terrain and travel advice
The long weekend is here and the winter stoke is high but it is not the time to go charging into the mountains but rather proceed with caution. This storm has delivered a good base of snow, but the season is still young.

In the subalpine the snowpack is shallow and unsupportive in many areas making for tricky travel conditions. Also, there are plenty of hidden hazards making the downhill travel a concern. Ski cautiously.

In the alpine there is a breakable rain crust starting at approximately 1900m and likely going to ridge top (we have limited observations from up high at this time). New snow last night has fallen with NW winds and new wind slab development will be likely on Southerly aspects. Visibility is poor and expect whiteout conditions.

Daily Discussion
”Take it easy your first day out” is always in the back of my mind as the sage advice my mother gave me as a child. It is tricky travel conditions in the backcountry currently and it is a good time to go for a short walk with the objective of stretching the legs and ensuring all of your gear is in good working order.

We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
