Regional Outlook:
The backcountry is just developing a reasonable base. At the moment there is baseless low density dry snow sitting on bushes and rocks. A very shallow cover. Interesting to note is that the South Easterly storm has wind loaded the usually scoured and icy North West aspects. So the deeper snow is not where you are used to it being and may ski/ride well once it has settled but for now it is largely a few ribbons of deep drifts and shallow cover elsewhere.

Terrain and travel advice
It is pretty tough travelling conditions out there. The visibility is not great and the snow is deep low density, becoming heavier, without a base in most places. Make conservative estimates of the distances that you will cover in these conditions. Perhaps a good day to cover some ground on a groomed trail somewhere and get the legs ready for the season. If touring within resort ‘inbounds’ make sure you stand clear of the operations teams. Rug up, stay dry. Looks messy. SM

Daily Discussion
The MSC field team did some general observations yesterday. It was pretty windy and snow transportation of the SSE wind was stripping those aspects and forming cornices and drifts on the North and West slopes. At 1750m we had low density dry snow (-2.5˚ / -1.5˚), the snow line was around 1500m where we found wet, rain affected snow. Today we are expecting a changeable outlook with conditions deteriorating toward the evening and more snow fall overnight with any luck.

Confidence: STRONG

We need your eyes too. If you’ve been touring in the Alpine National Park we’d love to know what you have seen. Every little bit helps.
