Travel & Terrain advice:
35cm of snow has fallen in the past 48 hours accompanied by moderate North West winds, which turned to South East and has transported and scoured snow from exposed ridges. It is likely that this recent snow has formed wind slabs upper / mid slope in the alpine on aspects lee to the North West and cross loaded areas. However, at this time it is uncertain as to how touchy these wind slabs may be. Exercise extra caution and evaluate slopes carefully prior to committing to your line.
Regional Community Observations:
Reports of fallen timber and bark debris at lower elevations on access routes significantly increasing travel times.
Seen something sketchy in the North East Vic region?
It’s a really mixed bag out there. ‘Rowdy’ would be the best term to describe the current conditions. 35cm of medium density snow in alpine areas. On South East alpine aspects there is a thin rime crust. On exposed areas rime exists on bushes and ‘cauliflower’ ice forms are building. At this time, there are insufficient field observations to reliably forecast the avalanche hazard. However, with this new snow and wind, isolated wind slabs may exist in the alpine.
